food preparations

thea loves to help with food preparations, of course helping is lot's of fun, i think so too. with this particular task, there was the opportunity to sneak some cheese, which is a special treat for thea, our food lover. especially savory foods are pleasing her palette, olives, cheese, no crackers though. this is particular difference to an of our other children, thea doesn't eat any kind of crackers, with one exception, the blevita gruyere kind. it's fascinating to me, how specific this child is.

as for this late spring time, i enjoy each look at the wonderful peonies. for some reason, the ones in my garden are not carrying lots of buds, the more i enjoy the wonderful bunch of big heads i got at the market last friday. i will go to the market again tomorrow...

on the table!

the weekend at my parents place was very quiet and just super relaxing. at least for me, joel was fighting his allergies as well as a nasty cough. it was a long weekend over pentecost and unexpected nice weather. we went for a longer walk and enjoyed the wonderful early summer flowers, of course we had to pluck a good size bouquet and put it on the table. there is something very unique about those wildflower bouquets, which i just can't find in a store bought or even an exotic nicely arranged flower bouquet from the florist. of course i love those too and am thrilled when ever i get flowers, but the flowers and grasses plucked from the meadows or the side of the path, well it's a gift we have been given, and i will enjoy it as much as i can.

there wonderful food on the table, great drink. it's a local micro brew 'barfuss brauerei', and we love it! that couple is really good at brewing, each bottle has it's own number and such a cool logo, it's crafted in small batches, well i could go on and on...
but there was one more thing on the table before and after meals, my hexagon quilt. it's just about the size i like and so i had to figure out where to add a few more hexies. i did it but still don't know what kind of back i will put to it and then quilt and finish it's edges... lot's of questions, more than i ever had about this project.

the rope adventure

there has been a bit of an adventure with rope and paint and the sewing machine. well we had lots of fun, after i discovered our old laundry line rope, which we used back when we lived in boston. i remember well, that i just couldn't move this one. it has been with me since we dried cloth diapers behind the house at greenstreet. though i didn't use it anymore in switzerland, as we have that great 'stewi', which is so much more space efficient.
so then, when i saw amanda's post about the laundry rope bowls and baskets, i quickly ha to take out the old rope and quickly look up gemma'y video about the sewing...
and now two days later, we have not anymore an old rope in the closet but two cool hats on boys heads, or better said, wonderfully cool baskets.

it was fun, it was messy, it was a great adventure for thea and me, and everyone got a chuckle out of those two big ones...

may weather and chickens

 we have such wonderful weather for this time of year, yes we are getting spoiled by the month of may. i'm aware hat today is the first 'eisheililge', saint pankrats. as it is a folklore rule that the second week of may is going to be cold, one should expect a cold snap.
it doesn't look like a cold snap this year. we are in the second week of may and the forecast is telling us record temperatures! day time highs in the eighties! it's hard to believe, but i love it. just perfect to sit in the garden even with a light breeze and stitch a bit on my prject.
the flowers already need to be watered and the tomato plants love this kind of weather. even the chickens seem to enjoy their sun baths, stretching out on the lawn in the mid afternoon.

our new barnefelder ladies have gotten used to their home. the found the places they can find ants. they are very different in character, two of them are shy and the other two are curious and trusty. this is wonderful for out kids as well as me. i just love to pick trudie up and gently pet her. i don't know if chickens like to be petted.... anyone knows about this?
at least she doesn't seem to mind it too much.

and they lay eggs, o we are getting so spoiled now, at least three eggs a day from the four ladies! there are omelets, scrambled eggs and 'fotzelschnitten' which are loved by all.

the mini grill at work

it's already a few weeks back, when amos and his colleague, together with joel started out with that mini grill project. on saturday evening was the inauguration of this super grill! the boys went shopping and prepared everything to perfection. even the skewers were all set with cork at their ends for a good and not hot grip...

we enjoyed watching them while they "celebrated" their dinner. it was  a bit slow, and amos was mentioning, that it felt a bit like eating a raclette dinner (of course not the taste, but the speed of eating).
we enjoyed our own dinner at the table next to the boys, and haven't had such fun entertainment for a long while. great project and i' sure they will take out this little grill again to sit and savor!

up :: down

up and down it is today. lots of rain in the morning and that was perfectly fine with me, as i planted the flower boxes and hung them up onto the balcony railing. every year when i'm planting in spring, i'm so excited to enjoy the full boxes a couple weeks later. the fun part for me is, that i'm just planting, someone else in the community has gone shopping. i really like this, as it is a collaboration of friends working to beautify the habitat. i know this sounds cheese and it even is, but i'm so very glad not having to go out and do the shopping. getting the plants into the box and the hands all full with soil is the fun for me.
as for now, the boxes still look a bit scars but not long and the boxes are not seen anymore, instead the flowers are taking over.

an other of my ups here down on the ground are the basil and tomato plants, which have grown under my own watch. i'm really liking the plants and rarely forget the watering. since two days they are now outside as it has gone a lot warmer. it's nice and warm not just during the daytimes but also at night.
i still have to figure out where i will put all the tomato plants.... (there is just about a 3rd of the tomato plants in the picture) green zebras and cherry... time will tell and maybe i have to get some boxes from the second hand shop or so.

pasta :: out of season

pasta is a favorite at all times for the bigger part of our family. there is one person who really is not a pasta fan and would not eat spaghetti at all. so this variation of pasta was liked by all and the fresh basil is a result of my early start with putting seeds into the seed box by the end of february....

it has gotten really warm the past couple days, so we enjoyed a summery supper. even though i'm aware of the tomatoes being still absolutely out of season. they are local grown, just 10 miles but in green houses, so not what i buy on a regular day.
and to my surprise, the kids noticed right away: "mama why do you put tomatoes in the salad? where are they from?" so at least the out of season was noticed!

in bloom

there is more in bloom every day. even as we had a lot of rain the past couple days, all the different shrubs around the house are not stopping with their spring bloom. it is just so beautiful, as i step outside, there is more and more and different blossoms to see and smell and enjoy.
today it's the hawthorn and we do have a handful of those shrubs around the house.
as i was out running the past few days there was also a lot of blackthorn, which is super pretty with all its little flower pedals but no green leafs yet, though those are not right out front, that's why a photo is lacking. (too much hassle having to carry the camera out into the wild...)

the lilacs re soon in full bloom, i know it's nothing compare to the arnold arboretum in jamaica plain, but we have a few bushes in the neighborhood, and that has to be good for me. we enjoyed it every year while in living in jp, please if you have an opportunity go and take it all in, just not on lilac sunday, as it usually is very crowded.
